MANILA – Josh “The Dentist” Neer is gearing up for another bout which he said is sure to be exciting.
Neer will go against Gleison Tibau in one of the featured fights of UFC 104: Machida vs. Shogun on Saturday (Sunday in Manila) at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.
“That’s one thing I’ve never been called, is boring. A lot of people go in to win by decision. I’ve never been that kind of fighter, which is why people like to see me fight,” Neer told Mike Russell of UFC.com.
“Even before the UFC started handing out bonuses, I was always looking to finish the fight by knockout or submission,” he said.
Neer noted that he tweaked his training a little bit by giving more attention to wrestling and boxing.
“I started out as a wrestler so I wanted to work to improve my jiu-jitsu and my striking to bring it up to the level that my grappling was at,” he stated.
He added that working with his boxing coach has improved his stand-up and has made his hands “crisper and faster.”
“Basically, I just train to be better in each discipline all the time – not to counteract the skills of my next opponent. I don’t break down tape of guys I’m going to fight at all. I don’t want to know what they’re going to do; I want to do what I’m going to do.”
Bigger guys
Neer also said he prefers training with fighters who are bigger than him.
“I kind of like getting beat up. I feel like if I’m getting beat up, then I’m doing what I should be doing. I don’t even mind going with the heavyweights,” he stated.
“I know if I’m getting beat up in the gym by guys who are bigger than me, when I get into the cage it’s easy because I get to go with a guy who’s my own size.”
Neer has a record of 25-8-1 while his opponent, Tibau, has 29 wins and six losses.
“The Dentist” won by submission (choke) over Mac Danzig in UFC Fight Night: Lauzon vs Stephens last February. He, however, lost to Kurt Pellegrino via unanimous decision in UFC 101 last August.
Neer pleaded guilty to driving under the influence (DUI) and felony eluding police charges last month after being arrested on New Year’s Eve, UFC.com added.
He was supposed to serve a seven-year prison sentence but it was withdrawn. He was just put on probation for two years.
UFC 104 is headlined by Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and light heavyweight champion Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida. The co-feature is between Cain Velasquez and “Big” Ben Rothwell.
