-- Supporters of pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao need not worry about the right ear injury that the Filipino boxing superstar sustained during his “Firepower” fight against Miguel Cotto last Sunday (Saturday in Las Vegas), a doctor assured.

Dr. Norberto Martinez, E.E.N.T. (eye, ear, nose, and throat) specialist at St. Lukes Medical Center, said there will be no complications in Pacquiao’s ear injury.

He noted that Pacquiao’s ear had to be drained because of the blood clot that resulted from Cotto’s punches.

“After trauma, you get hit, there will be accumulation of blood here, ma-de-detach yung perichondrium from the cartilage. And when that happens, you lose the blood supply and have a deformity to the cartilage,” stated Martinez.

“That’s what you want to prevent—a permanent deformity to the cartilage because it has lost its blood supply. So they had to do some kind of drainage,” he added.

Martinez mentioned that it is important to take care of the compress on Pacquiao’s right ear so that the blood will not return.

Cauliflower ear

Dr. Jeffrey Roth, the physician who attended to Pacquiao in Las Vegas, earlier declared that Pacquiao should be able to recover well from the injury.

He elaborated on what happened to Pacquiao’s ear to 411mania.com: “He had a fluid collection in the area between the skin and the cartilage of his right ear. It was drained. On routine follow up the next day, there was more fluid. This was drained as well.”

“This hematoma of the ear is common in fighters. If it is not drained, it can scar in and form a cauliflower ear,” he added.

Pacquiao sustained the injury after receiving blows from Cotto during the fight Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao emerged as the new WBO welterweight champion after routing Cotto by technical knockout in Round 12. He achieved his aim of winning his seven world titles in seven different weight divisions.
