-- Z “The Dream" Gorres, the Filipino boxer who suffered a subdural hematoma (traumatic brain injury) after a fight in Las Vegas, continues to show improvement while under treatment, his manager reported Tuesday (Manila time).
Making the team of the 27-year-old Gorres more optimistic about his recovery was the way he positively responds to people. According to PhilBoxing.com, the fighter managed to open his left eye on Tuesday morning (Manila time) and make a thumbs-up sign with his right hand when trainer Edito Villamor asked how he feels.
Gorres had brain surgery at the University Medical Center Friday night (Saturday in Manila) to remove clot on his brain and sent into medically-induced coma. The injury was a result of a big punch he absorbed from Columbian Luis Melendez in a 10-round bout he eventually won via unanimous decision.
“Z’s progress has continued to be very good. The brain pressure has remained stable. Monitoring was not needed anymore," ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer said in a press statement posted on FightFan.com.
“Plan for tomorrow is to decrease sedation and allow him to be more conscious. They will start weaning him from the ventilator in order to allow him to breathe on his own," Aldeguer further stated.
Gorres is scheduled for an MRI scan on Tuesday, the statement added.
The bantamweight prospect was among the three Filipino fighters who saw action in a “Friday the 13th" card at the House of Blues inside Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.
Gorres beat Melendez on the scorecards but not without taking a big shot near the end of the fight and eventually collapsing after the announcement of the verdict.
The two other RP bets lost their respective bouts, Federico Catubay yielding a unanimous decision to Alberto Rosas of Mexico in an International Boxing Federation (IBF) super-flyweight elimination duel and Mark Melligen dropping a 10-round split decision to Michel Rosales of Mexico in a welterweight clash.
