-- The Arroyo administration on Tuesday said it will give all assistance necessary to Filipino boxer Z “The Dream” Gorres who was hospitalized after winning a unanimous decision over Columbian Luis Melendez at the House of Blues in the Mandalay Resort and Casino over the weekend.

In a press briefing, Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said the government will provide Gorres the help that he deserves in accordance with the country’s laws.

“Definitely we want to take care of him,” Remonde said adding that the boxer gave honor to the country.

Gorres was pronounced out of danger after undergoing emergency surgery at the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada to drain blood from his head and relieve pressure on the brain.

The 27-year old Gorres is the World Boxing Organization’s (WBO) No. 3 bantamweight contender.

Doctors had placed him in an induced coma to stabilize his condition.

Gorres suffered a subdural hematoma (blood clot in the brain) after being knocked down in Round 10. Despite going down badly, Gorres got up 30 seconds before the final bell rang.

Gorres’ manager Michael Aldeguer of ALA Promotions said Gorres had to undergo surgery because his brain swelled. “In order to lessen the pressure, it was decompressed. A portion of the skull was removed.”

The UMC team of doctors attending to the Filipino boxer said they might stop sedating Gorres depending on his reaction.

“On the first day within 24 hours after the sedation was minimized, ang reaction niya was so fast. He wanted to remove all the tubes in his mouth and his nose so they sedated him again,” shared Aldeguer.

Signs of recovery
Gorres' wife said her husband has showed signs of recovery after the surgery.

Gorres’ wife, Duchess, told radio dzMM that she received good news from the head nurse at the UMC Hospital Monday morning.

“Binigyan ng instruction [si Z], nag-thumbs up, nag-response po siya. That's a good sign from him po,” said Duchess.

Aldeguer's father, Tony Alderguer of the ALA Boxing Gym, expounded on the good news.

“As of 3 a.m. Philippine time, my son talked to me and texted me that Z Gorres is recovering very well. Nung tinanong siya ng mga doctors at nurses, he made the thumbs up,” he noted.

He added that Gorres is conscious, the fighter’s brain is responding, and his vital organs are stabilized. He commented that Gorres’ recovery is “very fast, quite miraculous.”
