-- The Philippines failed to get past the preliminary stage of the Team Blitz chess competition after it was defeated by Iran in the Asian Indoor Games in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The RP chess team lost to Iran, 1.5-2.5, in the 9th and final round of the preliminary phase over the weekend, according to BilliardPhilippines.com.

The RP team finished 5th with 11 points.

China currently leads the standings after the preliminary round with 17 points while Vietnam is at No. 2 with 14 points. India and Iran are in 3rd and 4th, respectively, with 12 points each.

At 6th place is Kazakhstan (10 points), followed by Jordan (10 points). Qatar, Thailand, Uzbekistan, Mongolia and Iraq all finished with 9 points.

Japan, meantime, had 6 points while Nepal scored 5 points. Maldives was at the bottom of the standings with 2 points.

One win

Woman FIDE Master (WFM) Shercila Cua scored the country’s only victory on board 4 over Woman Grandmaster (WGM) Paridar Shadi.

Grandmaster Rogelio “Joey” Antonio, Jr. drew with GM Elshan Moradiabi, while GM Mark Paragua was beaten by GM Ehsan Ghaem Magami on board 1.

WFM Catherine Perena, meanwhile, lost to Woman International Master (WIM) Ghader Pour Shayesteh on board 3.

Meanwhile, the Team Blitz chess competition semifinals of the Asian Indoor Games will feature Iran vs China and Vietnam vs India.
