-- The death toll from Typhoon Santi (international codename Mirinae) now stands at 16, according to the latest report from the National Disaster Coordinating Council.

Eight people in Camarine Norte drowned or died from hypothermia while in Laguna, two people drowned while two others were killed after being hit by a collapsed wall.

Four other people were injured while four others remain missing, the NDCC said.

A total of 54,630 persons were affected by the typhoon. Of that number, 19,356 sought shelter in government evacuation centers.

Disaster officials said 50 houses were destroyed by a twister in Cavite.

"Santi" was the third storm to hit the country in recent weeks but it did not dump as much rain as Tropical Storm Ondoy (Ketsana) and Typhoon Pepeng (Parma).

The two previous storms killed over 900 people in central and northern Luzon.
