-- Two-time Olympian Harry Tañamor breezed his way to the gold medal round of the 25th Southeast Asian Games following a clinical 12-4 win over Htet Aung of Myanmar in the semifinals of the light-flyweight class Sunday in Vientiane.
The 31-year-old Tañamor danced and jabbed his way to victory, dictating the tempo of the fight from the onset and never giving his young, inexperienced opponent a chance to get on track.
He won the opening round, 5-1, and then took the second by an overwhelming margin, 9-3.
“Naglaro-laro lang si Harry," quipped Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) executive director Ed Picson shortly after the 48kg bout at the Olympasia gymnasium inside the sprawling National University.
“Tsamba lang, boss," Tañamor humbly said, then added, “Maganda lang yung naging simula ko. Tamang tama itong preparasyon para sa gold."
The gold medal match won’t be easy as waiting for Tañamor at the other corner is Kaeo Pongrayoon of Thailand.
The veteran boxer from Zamboanga City who has represented the country in the 2004 (Athens) and 2008 (Beijing) Olympics is the second member of the RP boxing team to reach the final after Josie Gabuco in women’s 46 kg.
On Monday, three others hope to follow suit as Asian champion Annie Albania, Alice Kate Aparri and Mitchel Martinez see action against separate Thai opponents in the women’s semis.
Appari takes on Dueannapha Ngamlam in the light-flyweight class, Albania meets Sopida Satumrum in the flyweight division and Martinez debuts at featherweight opposite Peamwilai Laopeam.
