-- Henry Pecana punched in 13 hits, three service aces and a block as he spearheaded three-peat-seeking University of Santo Tomas in crushing La Salle, 25-8, 25-15, 23-25, 25-16 in Sunday’s start of the UAAP Season 72 Volleyball Tournament at The Arena in San Juan City.
John Paul Torres also posted 13 hits along with two service aces while Salvador Depante and Jayson Ramos had 12 and 11 points, respectively, as the Tigers maintained their unbeaten slate dating back to their sweep of the eliminations and finals of last year’s tournament.
"Yan na nga yung sinasabi ko sa kanila. Sarili na lang nila ang tanging kalaban nila pag natalo pa sila dito," said UST Coach Emil Lontoc. "Tingnan mo naman ang nangyari, nag-relax sila pagkatapos manalo sa first two sets, ayun nakasingit pa ang kalaban nila ng isang set."

Earlier, University of the Philippines blanked Ateneo de Manila, 25-19, 25-21, 25-20 in the first match of the men's division.
First day hostilities in the distaff side saw University of the East edging National University in a tightly-contested match, 25-13, 16-25, 25-19, 16-25, 15-12.
Jimberly Dizon and Leuseht Dawis scored 11 points apiece to power the Lady Warriors to the win, which negated NU's Mervic Mangui's personal best of 29 points, including a game-high 27 hits.
