-- Boxer Jorge Linares may part ways with Hall-of-Fame trainer Freddie Roach after he suffered his second straight knockout defeat last weekend, against Sergio Thompson.

Thompson staggered Linares en route to a second-round technical knockout victory.

“I will continue in boxing, but we must make some changes and among those changes may be a new trainer,” Linares said in an interview with Examiner.

In October 2011, Linares was knocked out in the 11th round by Antonio DeMarco. They were supposed to have a rematch this year but that is now off after Linares lost to Thompson.

“I’m thinking about what happened in this fight with Thompson and some situations outside the ring... I also hope to meet with Golden Boy Promotions to discuss my future,” Linares said.

Linares said he was on the verge of a knockout in the first round, but was the victim of a headbutt in the second round.

“The wound began to bleed immediately. I went down to the mat and tried to tell them, but the doctor, without taking a good look at the injury, displayed the red card (to stop the fight),” he said.

Golden Boy Promotions president Oscar De La Hoya agrees that Linares needs a new trainer.

On his Twitter account, De La Hoya said Linares “has so much natural ability but has no defense.”

“He needs a new trainer, someone that is going to pay attention and teach him defense. Freddie Roach was just too busy and I was told he didn’t train him for this one,” De La Hoya said.
