-- MalacaƱang on Saturday night congratulated the Philippine Volcanoes rugby team for its victory over Sri Lanka in the final match of the Asian 5 Nations Division 1 Rugby Football tournament in Manila.

Presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda said the win showed the "grit, determination and resilience" that help Filipinos surmount any challenge.

"The entire Filipino nation congratulates our Philippine Volcanoes for their victory over Sri Lanka at the Asian 5 Nations Rugby. Once again we have shown that the grit, determination, and resilience at the core of our every effort can surmount any challenge," he said.

On Saturday, the Philippine Volcanoes drew energy from a cheering hometown crowd to defeat Sri Lanka, 28-18, in the match at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

With the win, the Volcanoes gained entry into the Asian Top 5, which will send at least one Asian nation to the 2015 Rugby World Cup in London, England.

The Volcanoes are now ranked 62nd in the world, but may rise higher in the International Rugby Board (IRB) rankings due to their impressive showing in the recently-concluded Division 1 tournament.

In Saturday's match, the Philippine team stormed to a 23-0 lead, with Sri Lanka scoring on a penalty kick before halftime to finally put themselves on the board, 23-3.

While Sri Lanka rallied to move closer at 23-18, the Philippines' Justin Coveney scored to give the Philippines breathing room at 28-18.
