-- Filipino fighter ZC Oliveros “The Dream” Gorres is showing signs of recovery after undergoing an emergency brain surgery Saturday in Las Vegas following his unanimous decision victory over Colombian Luis Melendez.
Gorres’ wife, Duchess, told radio dzMM that she received good news from the head nurse at the University Medical Center (UMC) Hospital Monday morning.
That's a good sign from him po,” said Duchess.
ALA Boxing Gym’s Tony Aldeguer, father of Gorres’ manager Michael Aldeguer of ALA Promotions, expounded on the good news.
“As of 3 a.m. Philippine time, my son talked to me and texted me that Z Gorres is recovering very well. Nung tinanong siya ng mga doctors at nurses, he made the thumbs up,” he noted.
He added that Gorres is conscious, the fighter’s brain is responding, and his vital organs are stabilized. He commented that Gorres’ recovery is “very fast, quite miraculous.”
Lessened sedation
Gorres suffered a subdural hematoma (blood clot in the brain) after being knocked down in Round 10. Despite going down badly, Gorres got up 30 seconds before the final bell rang.
Aldeguer mentioned that Gorres had to undergo surgery because his brain swelled. “In order to lessen the pressure, it was decompressed. A portion of the skull was removed.”
The UMC team of doctors attending to the Filipino boxer said they might stop sedating Gorres depending on his reaction.
“On the first day within 24 hours after the sedation was minimized, ang reaction niya was so fast. He wanted to remove all the tubes in his mouth and his nose so they sedated him again,” shared Aldeguer. When the sedation was lessened, Gorres responded and was able to do a thumbs up sign.
The UMC doctors said they might awaken Gorres in three to four days. He will most likely stay at the hospital for another month and then he will be given rehabilitation. Aldeguer thinks Gorres will stay in the United States for one to three months.
‘Boxing out of the question’
Duchess, who is in Cebu, said she is unable to go the US to be with her husband because there are certain papers that have to be filed and finalized.
She added that what happened to Gorres came as a surprise. Gorres, 27, has been training for the sport when he was 9. He began his professional career in 2000.
Pero nangyari pa rin sa kaniya na di inaasahan,” said the 26-year-old mother of four.
Meanwhile, if she would have it her way, she said she would not let her husband return to the ring after what happened to him.
Aldeguer, for his part, stated: “Boxing is out of the question. [It’s] very difficult for him to go back and I will not allow him to go back.”
He said that Gorres, who has his small carinderia business, can always work form him because he is a college level student and a “very, very good person.”
Another career aspect for Gorres is to be a trainer. Aldeguer added that all ALA boxers always have a job waiting for them after they retire.
Duchess, meantime, said her husband was a good provider.
Prayers needed
More than anything, Duchess and Aldeguer said what Gorres needs the most are prayers.
Aldeguer, meantime, said that Gorres’ expenses are being covered by his promoters—Top Rank Promotions and Manny Pacquiao Promotions. He said Gorres’ hospital expenses could amount to $200,000 to $300,000. He added that promoters always put up an insurance as anything can happen in a fight.
Gorres was expected to receive a net pay of $13,500 from the fight against Colombia’s Melendez, Aldeguer revealed.
